Farmer fined after firewood processing machine accident
Personal Injury 04 Oct 2011

A farmer has been fined £14,000 following an accident in which a worker lost a thumb and a number of fingers.
Richard Griffiths pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as he had failed to properly train and supervise the victim in the use of the firewood processing machine which caused the injuries.
Andrew Bowker, inspector at the Health and Safety Executive, said that the life-changing injuries that the young man suffered are likely to cause permanent disability.
He said: ""Employers and individuals must make sure that firewood processors are suitably guarded and operators are fully trained and supervised so that they work to an agreed safe system of work."
Mr Bowker emphasised the importance of the maintenance of the machines, saying an obvious defect that could have easily been identified was present.
Earlier this month, Kent-based W.E. Roberts (Corrugated) Ltd was fined after a driver suffered head injuries in a fall that caused head injuries that have had life-altering effects.
