'Inadequate risk assessments' lead to work accident

Personal Injury 05 Aug 2011

'Inadequate risk assessments' lead to work accident A member of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently told a court that an employee's work accident occurred as a result of "inadequate risk assessments".

HSE inspector Lyn Spooner spoke out at Cannock Magistrates Court where Molson Coors brewing Company, of Burton-on-Trent, was prosecuted.

The brewery was fined £31,000 and instructed to pay costs of £33,042.

Molson Coors Brewing Company admitted to breaching Sections 2 and 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, as well as Regulation 3(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

On May 20th 2008, delivery driver Peter Jackson suffered a work accident while at the firm's Station Street site.

He was unloading a trailer containing empty cans and walking to locate an area to deliver his load when a forklift truck struck him, injuring his wrist and foot.

In 2009/10, local authorities in the West Midlands prosecuted 29 offences, while the HSE prosecuted 108.
