Lorry loader operator fined after work injury accident
Personal Injury 17 Oct 2011

A man has been left with a serious
work injury after being crushed in a brick clamp.
Peter Hoy, 47, was injured at Saint Gobain Building Distribution Ltd after lorry load operator Mark Pratten, 53, from Radstock in Somerset, accidentally used the clamp button while trying to lift Mr Hoy with the grab on a crane.
Speaking after the prosecution, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Helena Tinton stated: "Even if the clamp has not been activated, attempting to lift Mr Hoy down from the cabin roof with a brick clamp was in no way safe.
"Two people's lives have been seriously affected in this incident."
The incident resulted in severe spinal injuries for the accident victim and a fine of £1,500 for Mr Pratten, who pleaded guilty to breaching Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974.
Section 7 states that workers must take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by their conduct.
