Man's work accident sees glass firm fined £11,200

Personal Injury 21 Jul 2011

Man's work accident sees glass firm fined £11,200 A Dunstable glass company has recently appeared in court and been fined £11,200 after one of its employees suffered a work accident.

Luton Magistrates Court fined Nicholls and Clarke Glass Ltd, which is registered at Freshwater Road, Romford, Essex, and ordered the company to pay costs of £3,977.

The firm admitted to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, as well as Regulation 3(2) of the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.

On October 20th 2009, Ian Swain was working at the company's factory on the Woodside Industrial Estate in Dunstable when a piece of glass he was handling shattered and hurt one of his arms.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Emma Rowlands issued accident advice, saying: "Had Mr Swain been provided with full arm protection he would have avoided serious injury."

Last month, magistrates also fined Clark & Fenn Skanska Ltd £5,000 after two employees were badly injured while building Derby's Westfield shopping centre.
