Man's work injury sees firms fined
Personal Injury 29 Jun 2011

Bristol Crown Court has recently fined two firms after a man suffered a
work injury that left him with brain damage.
The incident occurred in July 2008 when Richard Chodkiewicz was working on behalf of Hoistway Ltd at a construction site in Bristol on a lift installation, where a Radisson Blu hotel was being built.
He suffered the work injury when a tube fell on him.
As a result, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) concluded that Miller Construction (UK) Ltd, the principal building contractor on site, and Hoistway Ltd had not made sure that there was a safe system of working for the fitting of lifts in the area.
Hoistway, of Somerset, admitted to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. As a result, it was instructed to pay costs of £14,616 and fined £70,000.
Miller Construction (UK) Ltd of Edinburgh admitted to breaching Section 3(1) of the same Act, was fined £40,000 and told to pay costs of £17,232.
Elsewhere, in south-west England CL Electrical Solutions Ltd and H T Gardner Distribution Ltd were both prosecuted after a trainee electrician in the employ of CL Electrical Solutions Ltd was injured on the premises of H T Gardner.
