A construction company has been successfully prosecuted after an employee was injured in an electrical explosion.
Pineview Interiors Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and was fined £10,000, along with costs of £4,183.
A subcontractor working for the building suffering burns to between 30 and 35 per cent of his body and it is expected that his skin will take two years to recover.
Dominic Elliss, inspector at the Health and Safety Executive, warned that refurbishment works play a significant part of the construction industry's share of serious and fatal injuries in the workplace.
He said: "As a direct result of the defendant’s failure to identify or control the risk of short circuit their employee suffered extensive burn injuries from the resulting explosion."
Earlier this month, a 13-year-old girl received £750 in compensation after a fairground accident in which her restraint bar failed and she fell four metres.
