Rochdale engineering firm prosecuted after work accident
Personal Injury 29 Nov 2011

An engineering firm in Rochdale has been prosecuted after an employee lost three fingers.
Adelaide Engineering Company Ltd was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £2,514 in prosecution costs after a 21 year old worker from Burry, who wishes to remain anonymous, had three of his fingers cut off by an industrial saw.
The offending saw was being used to cut a tiny piece of steel, however the adjustable guard was not covering the section of the blade that was not in use.
During the prosecution it was also revealed that the injured employee had not received any instructions or training on how to use the saw and was left unsupervised.
Laura Moran, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector, stated: "It’s astonishing that an employee was left to work unsupervised on the saw, despite not having any previous experience or receiving any training on how to use it safely."
Appropriate training and supervision is vital in any sector to avoid unwanted health and safety accidents and personal
injury claims.
