Work accident sees Kent builder fined A work accident in which a man fell through a roof has resulted in a Kent builder being fined.

The Health and Safety Executive told Canterbury Magistrates Court that inadequate planning on the part of builder Hugh Pattison had resulted in the incident.

On February 17th last year a work accident occurred on a block of garages in Whitstable, Kent when Anthony Murphy, who was helping Mr Pattison on the roof of the buildings.

Mr Murphy was left with a number of accident injuries, including a fractured sternum and two broken ribs.

"I have not worked since the incident and it is unlikely that I will be able to work, drive or ride my motorcycle ever again," he said.

In court this week (May 24th), Mr Pattison admitted that he had breached Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

As a result, he was fined £800 and ordered to pay costs of £200.

Furthermore, a Wolverhampton company, MES Environmental Ltd, was fined £8,000 in 2009 after an unnamed worker suffered a fall from height.
