Inefficient probate process leads to wasted assets?

Probate & Estate Administration 13 Dec 2010

A slow probate process could mean homes lie empty and lose value. Lengthy probate processes dragging drag on for years may lead to loss of value for inheritors, as a new scheme focuses on bringing empty houses back into use - many of which are neglected due to ongoing probate.

The Bath Chronicle reveals a project to use vacant real estate is to be adopted by Bath and North East Somerset Council, yet the local authority has pointed out many of those classed as empty are undergoing estate administration.

A slow probate process may lead to structures being unused for a long stretch, meaning owners are not getting income from selling or renting and run the risk of it falling into disrepair.

Cabinet member for housing Councillor Vic Pritchard, comments: “This new empty properties policy sets out a clear action plan to bring empty homes in the area back into use for local residents," saying this ensures use of housing stock will be optimised.

Keeping a careful record when making a will could speed up the probate process, as the Guardian recently reported this should reduce the likelihood of disputes.
