Legal expert: Britons should write a will today

Probate & Estate Administration 09 Sep 2010

Legal expert: Britons should write a will today A legal expert has stated Britons should write a will today, revealing the majority of the nation have not already drawn up a testament, despite the need to care for family and loved ones after their death.

Writing in Money Week, Ruth Jackson observes individuals who have not written a will "leave chaos behind them".

She notes when it comes to probate, many people would be surprised at how their estate administration works in the absence of a legal document instructing solicitors, arguing individuals often choose to divide their assets in a different way.

The will-writing specialist notes long-term partners are particularly vulnerable to losing their inheritance if one half of a non-married couple dies without having drawn up a testament.

It was recently revealed bestselling author Steig Larson passed away without having written a will, leading to ongoing wrangling over his estate, including questions as to who has the rights to his unpublished work. ADNFCR-3248-ID-800059186-ADNFCR
