Writing your own will 'is complex and risky'
Will writing 07 Sep 2011

People who make their own will may be placing themselves in danger due to the risks and complexities involved with will writing, it has been claimed.
That is the opinion of Jane Hughes, a partner at Shropshire law firm FBC Manby Bowdler LLP, who told Shropshire Live that 'DIY probate' carries many complex tasks, which are best left up to a professional.
"Many professionally-drafted wills contain trusts to save tax, to avoid those who inherit paying care fees and to reduce the likelihood of potential disputes," she explained.
However, Mrs Hughes also noted that she has seen an upturn in the number of people attempting to write their own will who have made a mistake or need further guidance due to the difficult nature of the process.
She noted that matters such as these need the services of a professional organisation which can help to minimise the chances of mistakes being made.
It comes after lawyer Maria Shakespeare recently told the Birmingham Mail that the culture of 'DIY wills' should come to an end to ensure people are compiling documents that hold significant legal water.
