do you need a Will?

Everyone should consider whether writing a Will would give them greater peace of mind. A Will ensures that your property and possessions, however small, pass to those that you love and that vulnerable people are cared for properly.

Answering the questions in the checklist below will help you decide whether you need to write a Will.

Relationships or family matters

Are you in a relationship or has your status recently changed?
(e.g. living together, marriage or civil partnership, separation, divorce, remarriage)

Do you want to ensure your children or grandchildren are provided for?
Do you want to specify who would look after your children aged under 18?
Do you want to leave money to someone in a vulnerable position?
(e.g. with a disability, undergoing divorce, struggling financially)

Your assets

Do you own a property?
Do you have assets other than property?
(e.g. shares, savings, investments)
Do you have any possessions or items of sentimental value?
(e.g. a stamp collection, a piece of jewellery, household contents or a car)
Does paying Inheritance Tax concern you?
(Payable at 40% on the value of property, possessions and savings worth over £325,000 per person 2010/11)

Special arrangements

Do you want to name capable people to administer your estate?
Do you wish to make specific arrangements for pets or charities?
Are there any other specific wishes you would like to make on the event of your death?
(e.g. funeral wishes, organ donation, donation to medical science)
