Dedicated health services for the Muslim community

Preparing for and participating in Hajj, Umrah and Ramadan is an important time for Muslims. The Co-operative Pharmacy recognises there is a lot to consider. We offer a dedicated healthcare service for Muslims through our branches in communities across the UK.

For Ramadan, which takes place in August this year, 84 branches of The Co-operative Pharmacy have specially trained pharmacists on hand. They can provide advice and support to help you meet health needs arising from this important religious festival.

The service includes guidance on taking regular medication if you are fasting, tailored health checks and stop-smoking advice in partnership with Nicorette.

With the religious observance of fasting, Ramadan is a particularly good time to consider stopping smoking. Our pharmacists will be able to share ways to help people beat the addiction and change existing habits.

Mandeep Mudhar, Head of Business Development at The Co-operative Pharmacy, said “We appreciate the importance of cultural understanding and sensitivity when discussing the implications of healthcare on people’s religious beliefs. Our trained pharmacists are here to help with this, and with the preparations leading up to Hajj or Umrah.”

In addition to help during Ramadan, from September this year The Co-operative Pharmacy will be providing a travel vaccination service for Muslims preparing for the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Protecting against meningococcal infection is a must for individuals undertaking Hajj or Umrah. In partnership with Novartis Vaccines and The Muslim Council of Britain, we are delighted to be offering a meningococcal vaccination (ACWY) package to Muslim pilgrims.

Hajj takes place in November this year. We are urging pilgrims to start health preparations sooner rather than later - the vaccination is required before a travel visa can be issued.

Before the vaccination, individuals must obtain a voucher which entitles them to for a discounted price of £35**. Vouchers can be obtained from local mosques, community centres and participating branches of The Co-operative Pharmacy.
