Treating the symptoms of hayfever

Hayfever is an allergic reaction to grass or tree pollens and is a very common condition – affecting around 20% of people in the UK. It is most common in early spring and throughout summer but this will depend on which type of pollen you have an allergy to.

It is caused as a result of the immune system (the body’s defence system) overreacting when the body comes into contact with pollen. This triggers the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Symptoms of hayfever are sometimes compared to the symptoms of a cold:

  • Sneezing attacks
  • Itchy, watery, bloodshot eyes
  • Itchy mouth and throat
  • Headaches
  • Congestion

The good news is that as you get older, you may become much less sensitive to pollen to the point where symptoms disappear altogether! In the meantime, The Co-operative Pharmacy is here to offer you advice and have a full range of products available to help you.

There's lots of effective hayfever treatments available without a prescription:

Tablets (antihistamines)

When choosing your tablets, some may be more suitable for you than others, for example, some products can make you drowsy so bear this in mind when making your purchase.

Nasal sprays

There are different types of nasal spray available for the treatment of hayfever.  They help you breathe more easily and unblock your nose.

Eye drops

Common symptoms of hayfever are watery and itchy eyes. Eye drops are available to help relieve these symptoms.

Syrups (antihistamines)

There are several syrups available. These are commonly used as an alternative for those people who don’t like to take tablets  also for children. Taking syrups can provide you with the same relief as taking a tablet.

Speak to your Co-operative Pharmacist for advice if you are unsure which product would be most suitable for you and your family.
