Quick home improvements

With Christmas just around the corner, it's time to think about doing all those jobs around the home that you've been putting off all year.

Follow our handy guide for quick home improvements, just in time for the holiday season...

Out with the old and in with the new

Before you do anything else, have a good old clearout and give anything you haven't used in the last 12 months to someone who might benefit from it.

A lick of paint

Give the front door, the hallway and the bathroom a quick lick of paint. Choose a neutral but warm colour that will reflect the sunlight around the rest of the house, creating a sense of light and space in even the darkest of areas.  There are great deals to be had on interior paints so choose a warm day, get painting, throw open the windows and enjoy your new house in just a few hours.

Blinded by colour

Make or buy a new kitchen blind for a quick, easy and satisfying way to add a splash of colour to your kitchen and give it a new lease of life. If your blind is spattered in grease and dirty dishwater then do what you’ve wanted to do for a while and take it down and start again; it’s a cost effective way of improving your home.

Shelve it

Put up some new shelves and rid yourself of all that clutter in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom or in the living room. Arm yourself with some simple shelves, an electric drill, a screwdriver and a spirit level, stick a pencil behind your ear and you’re away.

One-wall makeover

Create a feature wall in your living room or bedroom with some bright and stylish wallpaper. Opt for classic patterns and colours you'll still be loving in a couple of years time – you don’t want to have to rip it down and start again when the fashions change.

Love your garden

A little bit of TLC goes a long way during Autumn and Winter. It's all about tidying up and getting the garden ready for next year. Read our gardening tips and get your home looking beautiful outside as well as inside.

I think you mean the point n paint painting system, about £13 plus p and p which comes with a tray and replacement pads . no pole which is a bit annoying. You can get it on Amazon, reviews at http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B002O5P5U4 - not all particularly encouraging!

I saw a fantastic gadget on a shopping channel to apply paint really effortlessly with a perfect finish. It looked a bit like the shape of an iron and could cut into corners without needing to use loads of masking tape, which is a real pain.

Does anyone know what it is called or where I can get one? I always regret not picking the phone up when I saw it. Or maybe I’m just a marketing man’s dream!

When buying shelves, I have found that the screws that often come with them are just not long enough to allow the shelf to bear reasonable weight. It’s worth buying a 6 inch drill bit and screws/rawlplugs to use instead. So that the shelf won’t dip and fall off over time
