Essential winter equipment for
your car

motoring

If this winter turns out to be anything like last year, we could be in for some harsh conditions, including plummeting temperatures and heavy snowfall.

And if you’re driving on the roads over winter, it pays to make sure your car is properly prepared in advance. We’ve teamed up with The Co-operative Motor Group to offer you some advice on essential equipment and checks for your car before the winter begins.

Book your car in for a service

We all know older vehicles need an M.O.T test to drive legally on the road, but having your car serviced regularly by a certificated garage or technician is just as important. That way you know everything is in good order – from the engine to the electrics.

The Co-operative Motor Group offers Seasonal Health Checks for any make or model of car for only £19.99, including a year’s worth of free RAC breakdown cover, a great way to get your car ready for winter.

Learn how to perform your own checks too

Getting a professional service for your car is a must. But it’s also a good idea to know what to look out for yourself – from checking your tyres to reviewing your oil levels. Again, The Co-operative Motor Group is on hand to help…

Check your insurance and breakdown cover

Insurance is one of those things you tend to pay for then forget about. But before the winter sets in, it’s a good idea to check your policy document to see what cover you have – and whether it includes breakdown cover.

Don’t skimp on the de-icer!

Be prepared for plummeting temperatures. Make sure you have a good quantity of de-icer in your car – both the special salt and the spray. The de-icing salt is ideal for sprinkling on slippery road surface round your car, while the de-icing liquid spray is essential for frozen locks. You can also buy de-icer to add to your windscreen washer water to ensure maximum visibility. And don’t forget to make sure you have a good quality ice scraper in the car too.

Invest in a good snow shovel

Keep a good snow shovel in your car. Heavy snow and blizzards can soon leave drivers stranded, so having the right equipment on hand could makes all the difference.

Treat yourself to an emergency car kit

Tick all the safety boxes in one go by investing in a good emergency car kit. These usually include some or all of the following:

  • a red ‘glow-in-the-dark’ hazard warning sign,
  • a torch and a high visibility vest
  • a first aid kit
  • a tow rope and foot pump
  • an emergency mobile phone charger
  • snow and ice grips to slip on over your shoes.

A good kit will cost around £30 or upwards, but it’s money well spent for your peace of mind.

Don't make risky journeys

If the winter weather is particularly bad – or the forecasts don’t look good – only drive if your journey is essential or an emergency. Otherwise, it's simply not worth the risk. A little short-term inconvenience can save a lot of hassle.

Make sure you stay warm

It seems obvious to keep warm clothing in your car during winter. But it’s amazing how many people forget just how cold it can get if you’re unlucky enough to get stuck. So pack a spare hat, gloves, scarf, coat, winter boots and a blanket. You can also buy a foil emergency blanket for just a few pounds from good motoring accessories stores or a motoring organisation like the RAC.

Pack emergency food and drink

If you have to make a longer journey by car during the winter, take food and drink with you. Again, if you do find yourself stranded, you could be waiting for a while until help arrives. So packing a flask of coffee, tea or juice plus some snacks like biscuits or fruit to keep you going is a good idea.
