Confusion over SPF means skin damage is rife

Lack of clarity over the precautions needed to protect the skin is leading to an increase in skin damage.

Experts are concerned that conflicting advice on the use of sun cream is confusing people and leading to a surge in the number of people with lines and wrinkles, sun-damaged skin and more serious illnesses such as skin cancer.

Earlier this year the government announced that SPF15 should be the minimum strength used by all, but this advice was greeted with scepticism by many who believe that the minimum should be higher and the advice more thorough.

Consultant dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe agrees: “There’s more confusion about sun protection than anything else.

“In Britain, daily use of an SPF15 product is exactly what people need, however it must have UVA protection. Additionally, if you’re pale skinned and going outdoors in the summer, or overseas, use SPF30 with UVA protection.”
