Miracle baby 'frozen' for three days

A newborn baby girl, who was starved of oxygen in the womb, has stunned doctors with her recovery.

Doctors fought to save Ella Anderson after her oxygen and blood supplies had been restricted. After reviving the tiny girl, medical staff placed her in a cooling blanket to help protect her brain, causing her body temperature to drop from 37C to just 33.5C.

The pioneering technique worked, and now at nine months old, Ella is a happy and healthy baby who has amazed doctors with the speed of her recovery.

Topun Austin, consultant paediatrician at Cambridge’s Addenbrooke Hospital, said: "Cooling is now universally seen as the standard of care for all infants who suffer from a lack of oxygen at birth like Ella.

"It is very important that infants eligible for this cooling treatment are identified early, as the sooner the cooling starts, the better."

According to a report by The Sun, Ella’s parents, Jason Anderson and Rachel Claxton, have started a Facebook campaign to raise money to help more hospitals afford the cooling equipment.
