VO: Thinking of heading off to a festival this summer? Make sure it’s memorable for all the right reasons. We’ve asked some seasoned festival goers to give us some of their valuable tips.

VOX POP 1: My top festival tip is to make sure that, when there is a big group of you, you have an agreed meeting point if anything goes wrong. If you get separated, or whatever, if your phones aren’t working, you know a place and a time that you are all to reconvene so everyone knows what everyone else is getting up to.

VOX POP 2: When you get to festivals you’ll be surprised at how expensive the food and drink actually is. Make sure you take your own bottle because, around the campsite, there will be clearly marked fountains for clean water. Take it, it’s free and it will keep you hydrated during the potentially warm summer, fingers crossed!

VO: Before heading off to a festival what five items should you not leave civilisation without? Kaye from The Co-operative Pharmacy has some useful tips about products which can prove invaluable at festivals.

Kaye from The Co-operative Pharmacy:

Having a little kit than you can take with you that’s got all your essentials is really really important. One of the major things that I would consider is sun protection…the sun cream itself should be a SPF factor 15 or above and it needs to have a UVA rating of 4 or 5 stars and you’ll get deals on these at your Co-operative Pharmacy…

Another product that I would have in a kit would be hand sanitiser. Depending on the festival that you’re attending, toilet conditions can be pretty basic and they can deteriorate as time goes on…hand sanitiser is just great for your own personal hygiene…

Insect repellent is always a good addition…rather than waiting until you’re bitten you’re probably better protecting yourself before the event…just pick one up and using it often saves you against midges or any other insects that may be floating about.

Something that is really important if you’re attending a music festival is to have some earplugs with you. Because you’re going to be listening to loud music for a long period of time you either need to take yourself away from the situation or use the earplugs to protect your actual hearing and again at night when everybody else still wants to party but you’re ready for bed…

Something else that can be um really um useful are things along the lines of wet wipes and tissues. We all use them around the house, we use them for multi functions, just take a packet with you as well, can be used for just a clean to freshen up as some hygiene for yourself and the rest of your companions. And cooperative pharmacy usually have a good deal on these either as a bumper pack or pound deals leading up to these events.

VO: Thanks Kaye. Some great advice there. But before you start getting your festival survival kit together, here’s a few final essentials…

VOX POP 3: Oh it’s definitely the she-wee, definitely. Changed my life, so liberating, never miss a band ever anymore. No queues, no toilet queues, no smelly toilets, no scarves over your mouth. Just do your she-wee thing…but wear a skirt…she-wee does not work with trousers.”

VOX POP 4: I always wear funky wellies, you just don’t know what’s going to happen with the British weather.

SFX: Sound of cheering crowd at festival

VOX POP 5 (Jenny): The last one is bring a sense of humour because something can go wrong and you don’t want to let it ruin your experience at a festival.”

VO: We hope these tips will help make your festival experience a great one – even if it’s a wet one! For more invaluable ideas visit the Health & Wellbeing section of The Co-operative Magazine at www.co-operative.co.uk/magazine
