children with autism are learning with the help of a donation of £500

The 2H After School Club based at Ystruth Primary School provides care for autistic children and their siblings. The school club has recently received a donation of £500 from The Co-operative Community Fund, and has used the money to create a sensory garden.

The new facility features shrubs and plants of different colours, heights and textures, plus a seating area. As well as a place of recreation and discovery, it will also benefit pupils during class time who can use the garden as a ‘quiet room’.

Club treasurer Paula Evans said: “Sensory environments are very beneficial to people on the autistic spectrum, so this outdoor area for the children is a great way for them to use all their senses to promote their development. We really appreciate this support from The Co‑operative.”

The donation comes from The Co-operative's Community Fund. Just over £1m is available annually to support charities and community groups in regions across the UK, with local members’ committees allocating the awards throughout the year based on a set of values and principles such as social responsibility and caring for others.

“The Community Fund can make a real and lasting contribution to local communities, and we are delighted to make this award to the 2H After School Club. Many community groups share our co-operative values and could benefit from an award, and we would certainly welcome their applications,” said chair of South Wales area committee June Rao.
