Co-operative members making a sound investment in Radio Nightingale

With a £3,400 donation from The Co-operative Membership Community Fund, Rotherham District General Hospital was able to fund its hospital radio and keep it on air. It’s just part of the £7m we’ve invested in community projects in the last 10 years.
Radio Nightingale, which operates from Rotherham District General Hospital, will use the award to fund a year's licence fees and buy a printer and digital camera to help with promotional work.
"Hospital radio provides a unique service, ensuring patients are kept in touch with their local community, family and friends. Radio Nightingale is staffed by volunteers and receives no core funding, so this donation from The Co-
operative is much appreciated," said station manager Mel Jaques.
The Community Fund is part of The Co‑operative Group’s membership scheme which allows shoppers to donate the extra pence in their twice-yearly share of profits payouts to worthy causes.
Just over £1m is available annually to support charities and community groups in the region with local members’ committees allocating the awards throughout the year based on a set of values and principles such as social responsibility and caring for others.
“The Community Fund can make a real and lasting contribution to local communities and we are delighted to make this award to Radio Nightingale. Many community groups share our co‑operative values and could benefit from an award, and we would certainly welcome their applications,” said regional secretary Joan Keysell.
