Thanet Community Transport Association

people with mobility problems now find it easier to get around thanks to £1,100

Thanet Community Transport Association provides a fully accessible, affordable transport system which is used by more than 160 community groups in the area. The group has just been awarded a Community Fund donation of £1,100 to buy two new wheelchairs, plus wheelchair restraints that allow them to be used safely in vehicles, giving passengers the freedom to get on and off with ease.

“The new wheelchairs will be used for clients who do not normally use one, but need help getting from their home to the vehicle, or from a vehicle to their final destination. In the past, some clients have had to borrow chairs or stay on the bus which defeats the purpose of the trip. Now, thanks to The Co-operative this will be a thing of the past. We are very grateful,” said the association’s manager Ian Day.

The donation comes from The Co-operative Community Fund, which offers grants from £100 to £5,000 for worthy causes. Just over £1m is available annually to support charities and community groups in regions across the UK, with local members’ committees allocating the awards throughout the year based on a set of values and principles such as social responsibility and caring for others.

By using our businesses such as shops and pharmacies, members receive a share in all the profits we make. Lots of members choose to donate their share to the Community Fund so they can support local groups in their area, like Thanet Community Transport. Anyone can become a member. “The Co-operative Community Fund can make a real and lasting contribution to local communities, and we are delighted to be of help to Thanet Community Transport Association. Many community groups share our co-operative values and could benefit from an award, and we would certainly like to hear from them,” said Co-operative Group regional secretary Karen Froggatt.
