Regional Boards

Some regional board members

Area Committees (and the Northern Ireland Members' Council) elect representatives on to Regional Boards. The Board is responsible for a lot of our work in your region, including:

  • Keeping an eye on the performance of The Co-operative Group’s businesses in the region
  • Making decisions on such matters as buying or refurbishing The Co-operative Group’s branches
  • Working with management and The Co-operative Group Board of Directors to make sure we always represent our members’ interests.

Oh and by the way: the co-op was the first shop near me to stock Wyke Farms Super-Light Cheddar (then known as LesKol) which is the first low-fat real Cheddar I've found. It's made near Cheddar (none of this strange imitation stuff the co-op often stocks) and actually tastes right. It just doesn't melt in the usual way because of the low fat content. It is a real cheese. All cheeses are messed about to some degree.

I've the opposite problem with the small co-op near me: full-fat only in some lines.  Happily, the larger co-op (ex-Somerfield) has a choice, but they have very few vegetarian sandwich fillings... can't please all the people all the time.

It does puzzle me how we decide what to stock sometimes, though. I've been in one co-op which stocked 12 lines of tinned tuna but no anchovies, and ground coffee but no filter papers.  I asked the food chief exec a few years ago and was told it would be fixed so items would be stocked in sensible groups, so there is either a complete set or an obviously-desirable choice.

We must avoid losing whole trolly sales because they've got to go to a competitor for coffee filters anyway, so they do their whole shop there. But sensible stock combinations doesn't seem to have happened yet.

Should we get some "suggest stock" feature on the website, where we can say product and store and get a yes or an official reason why it's no. Then if we disagree with the reason, we could try to change trading policy through the democracy.

Or is that a foolish road towards micromanagement of the trading side?

Hi,

Sorry I didn't specify. the local I spoke of is a larger coop.i.e. one you'd expect to give you choice.

The customer service "health police" people mentioned are faceless bureaucrats at some head offices.

the point I made is WE don't.

Don't you think it's just a bit ominous that a request for a food product should get the response that they're not doing it because it's not good for my health?

Hope your local gets sense and stocks your coffee filters.

Best wishes
