What elected members do

What elected members do

Our committee members are the eyes and ears of our business working with Co-operative management and the wider community, making sure your views are heard and that we meet our co-operative principles.

Elected member representatives meet up with other representatives in your area every month or so at committee meetings.

Their local knowledge helps The Co-operative Group make the most of opportunities in the area. For example, they’ll discuss the performance of The Co-operative businesses in their area, plan member and community activity and help to decide which groups should receive Community Fund grants from The Co-operative Group.

As an elected member you’ll have to achieve a number of things whilst you’re in office. These tasks aren’t difficult, and can be inspiring and rewarding too. Find out what you will be doing.

  • When first elected, you’ll be required to attend the national induction for newly elected members of whichever body you have joined
  • You’ll come along to the monthly committee meetings, members meetings in your area/region and take part in your area committee conference/regional board conference (if you're a regional board member)
  • You can help your membership team run events and activities – you can get involved as much or as little as you like.
  • You will have the opportunity to stand for election to your regional values & principles committee, or to your regional board (after two years on your area committee or the Northern Ireland Members' Council)
  • You'll have the opportunity to be delegated to attend various national and regional meetings and confrerences

Naturally, we’ll also ask you about the Code of Conduct which sets out what is expected from elected members.
