Area Committees
How the democratic structure works
Local committees are part of a bigger democratic structure that govern the
Co-operative Group. After being a member for over one year, individuals can stand for election on to a local committee, called an Area Committee.
These members are your local representatives. They are loyal customers and so are ideally placed to be the eyes and ears of the Society locally, working on the ground to make sure The Co‑operative Group is giving members what they need. There are usually between 12–16 members on each committee, and members usually serve for three years. Here's what they do:
- raise matters of concern with managers or with the Regional Board
- provide local intelligence are consulted regarding the performance of the business outlets in their area
-
contribute to and support the events and activities organised for members and the wider community in the area
-
allocate Community Dividend awards which are there to benefit you and your community
-
get involved with community groups; helping people understand how The Co‑operative Group might be able to help them
