The Co-operative tops the Concerned Consumer Index

21/04/2009 – We are No. 1 for the second year running

The Co-operative has once again been rated as the number one supermarket for addressing social and environmental issues by the Concerned Consumer Index.

The Index is based on independent research into consumers’ impressions of business behaviour, and is regularly published in The Times newspaper.

In March the Index asked consumers to rate supermarkets on how well they are addressing social and environmental issues.

Last year The Co-operative was rated number one and this year we have been rated number one again – beating Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer who came second and third respectively.

This follows on from The Co-operative Bank’s high ranking earlier this year; in January the Index reviewed consumer attitudes towards banks, and The Co-operative Bank was number one for its general behaviour, and also the bank that consumers would be most willing to recommend to their family and friends.
