Illness, lost luggage and phone scrolling ruin holidays, according to new research

27 September 2018

  • Over a third (35%) of holidaymakers say that illness has ruined their holiday
  • A quarter blame lost luggage
  • A fifth of holidaymakers blame work-related reasons

As the summer holidays, along with the UK’s heatwave are all well and truly over, Co-op Insurance has revealed what has been putting a dampener on holidays this year.

Despite the long, hot summer coming to a close, the insurer is providing the list in an effort to help jetsetters plan effectively for any last minute sun searching or winter breaks.

According to the research, the number one holiday spoiler is getting ill, with over a third (35%)* stating this as the reason. Another third (33%) say that lack of cleanliness in accommodation ruins a holiday, whilst a quarter (25%) blame lost luggage for ruining a holiday.

Work-related reasons have spoiled a holiday for a fifth (19%) of holidaymakers, with a tenth (11%) admitting that thinking about work has ruined time away, and a further tenth (8%) saying a call from their boss dampens the mood.

A further tenth (10%) of UK holidaymakers blame a holiday companion being glued to their phone for ruining their time away, whilst 8% complain that a lack of mobile data can ruin a holiday

what ruins holidays

Colin Butler, Head of Travel Insurance at Co-op says:

“Although some of the situations on this list are unavoidable, being aware of the potential risks on holiday can ensure a holiday isn’t totally ruined.

“Travel insurance can provide a safety net when it comes to things such as falling ill on holiday, or losing your luggage. However, some potential holiday-spoilers cannot be saved by an insurance policy – so, in some instances, the only solution may be to step away from the social media and towards the sun!”
