Backing Britain

UNP Co Op 41618 Petrol Worksop Road Aston049

Because we're owned by you, we do right by you.

Our members have told us that the cost of living is their top concern, and too many shops are empty on their high street.

We believe it's vital that as a business, we keep investing in the UK economy.

Shirine Khoury-Haq, Chief Executive, Co-op Group:

"Co-op is facilitating over £1 billion of spend into the UK economy over the next year. This includes our biggest ever number of price reductions to help with the cost of living, continued investment in British farmers and suppliers, and a focus on keeping high streets vibrant and safe.

As a business owned by 7 million members, not shareholders, we measure success in the value we create for people and places. Backing Britain reflects our belief that responsible business must play its part in the country’s recovery and future growth."

Backing high streets and communities

In recent research, 90% of surveyed members said that local stores were vital to their community.

Over the next year, we'll keep championing local retailers and high streets through our On Your Corner, In Your Corner campaign, while continuing to open Co-op stores across UK communities, including new sites, relocations and refits.

We're also proudly continuing our commitment to our Local Community Fund, which currently provides support to 22,500 causes in the UK, from food banks to youth projects to mental wellbeing initiatives.

Backing customers

58% of members who took part in our survey rank the cost of living as one of their key concerns, up from 51% last year.

We're working to keep bringing down prices to help families manage weekly budgets.

In fact, we're planning to reduce the cost of over 1,000 products across the next year.

Backing British business

We'll continue to spend over £700 million a year with British farmers and agriculture suppliers, maintaining our 100% British meat commitment across our own-brand products – fresh, frozen and as an ingredient.

Our commitment to British business goes beyond agriculture, too. We'll continue to spend with British businesses who provide the products and services we need to run our business. And through Co-op Power, we'll help UK organisations cut their costs while sourcing low-carbon energy.

Backing opportunity

We've set a target of creating 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030 through our Levy Share service, which has already transferred £40 million of unspent apprenticeship levy from larger employers to smaller businesses and community organisations since 2021.

We also continue to proudly support 38 Co-op Academies, where we fund additional support for families and pupils in need.

962 Co-op members were surveyed between 14-19 November 2025 via Co-op Collective. Data was weighted by age to be representative of the active Co-op member base.
