Why international development matters to Co-op

We’re a co-operative with a presence in every postal area in the UK. Our point of difference continues to be the value we return to our 7.5 million active member-owners and the relationship we maintain with their communities.

And while this is true, it shouldn’t be taken that our focus begins and ends with those issues closest to home.

We’re part of an international co-operative movement, which welcomes the exchange of ideas and witnesses meaningful partnerships emerge between co-operators worldwide. Thinking beyond our own back yard, when it comes to better ways of doing business, is part of our heritage. That’s why, this week, we announced our Co-op as a founding member of the new ‘Business Alliance for Global Development’ with the CBI.

We will be championing international development and aid spending – and not just because it’s ‘the right thing to do’ (although it is.)

Investing in international communities is not mutually exclusive from creating new prospects or safeguards within the UK. It could reduce the risk of another pandemic; it could enhance diplomacy for those experiencing unrest; it could mitigate factors with the scope to threaten trade and economies.

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight right now, and I have seen firsthand how new technology, education and amenities supports the communities of Fairtrade suppliers and ensures the quality and availability of goods for our members and customers.

One of the first actions undertaken by the Business Alliance for Global Development was to seek insight from UK business leaders. The majority of those we approached recognised the importance of supporting developing countries through overseas aid partnerships. It was also widely agreed – between SMEs to blue chip multinationals alike - that greater collaboration between UK commerce and UK government on international development programs would be good for our businesses.

We’re closely following the latest from Government, where minister Kirsty McNeill has pledged to revisit and reverse cuts to spending on international aid and development, in alignment with the administration’s drive for economic growth.

The Business Alliance for Global Development will be advocating for smart investment in international development as a route to unlocking greater potential for UK business with more innovation, more jobs and more trading opportunities, as well as important gains for commercial partners overseas.

Our Co-op has an inherent connection to those we serve, the markets we operate within and wider international commerce. I’m proud to represent it as part of the Alliance.
