Annual toy appeal delivers a sleigh-load of smiles thanks to community spirit
23 December 2015
A sleigh-load of smiles have been delivered to disadvantaged children across Bridgend County Borough after an annual toy appeal launched by Bridge FM, The Co-op and HMP & YOI Parc received its “best ever” response from the community.
Organisers appealed to the community to donate toys and gifts to the Christmas toy appeal – now in its eleventh year – by popping along to local Co-op food stores in Margam, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major, Pontycymmer, Pencoed, Porthcawl, Brackla and Pyle (petrol filling station).
Over 1,500 toys and gifts were donated by the community in a show of festive spirit which will make a real difference to children whose families are struggling or in need during the festive period.
The gifts were wrapped in the HMP & YOI Parc workshops and distributed with the support of local charities and organisations including Mental Health Matters, Princess of Wales Hospital (Children’s Ward & Special Baby Unit), Salvation Army, Bridgend County Borough Council Family Support, Y Bont, Women’s Aid, Homestart, Ty Hafan, the Wallich, Flying Start Settings and Ty Cornel.
Lee Jukes, Bridge FM Breakfast Show Presenter, said:
“The toy appeal was another resounding success this year! We are amazed yet again by the generosity of our listeners and the community. We collected hundreds of presents at local Co-op food stores and had lots of fun getting out and about to various local charities and organisations to deliver them. Most of us take Christmas for granted and the aim of the toy appeal is to help local children and families who are in need at Christmastime. Yet again the local community of Bridgend county borough have not let us down - Thank you to everyone who donated a gift and, to The Co-operative and HMP & YOI Parc for all of their support and, to employees at Bridgend Ford Engine plant who themselves donated many sackfulls of presents … Merry Christmas!”
Giles Jenkins, Area Manager for The Co-operative food, said:
“The Co-op is a community retailer, at the heart of local communities, and we were delighted to once again support this appeal. It is heart-warming that so many people remember to think of others at this time of year, the gifts will help to spread the magic of Christmas to those less fortunate and we would like to say ‘thank you’ to our customers, members and the wider community for all of their kindness, generosity and support – they have made a real difference to a local child this Christmas.”
