Co-op Chair issues rallying cry to Members ahead of AGM vote
27 April 2016
The Chair of the Co-op is urging its members to help maintain the mutual’s Rebuild momentum by voting at its forthcoming AGM.
Allan Leighton issued the rallying cry as members across the country receive their voting packs ahead of the Co-op’s annual meeting, which will take place in Manchester on 21 May.
Members will have the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the Co-op by voting on a range of matters*; from Fairtrade products to ethics and sustainability and from Executive and colleague remuneration to political subscriptions and donations. Members not attending can still have their say by returning their ballot papers by midday on 18 May.
The call to vote comes on the back of the Co-op’s 2015 annual results, with the Rebuild of the business firmly on track following £400 million of investment to support better products and services for members. That investment was reflected in strong sales growth in the Food, Funerals and General Insurance businesses.
The Co-op Group Board recognises the importance of the member voice to sustain and build upon the momentum within the business and the mutual’s move to one member one vote was a critical step in ensuring its large national membership has its say on key issues. For every vote received, The Co-op has also committed to donate 50p to support its joint-campaign with the British Red Cross to tackle isolation and loneliness. In just eight months, £1m has been raised and the AGM vote will boost this figure further.
Allan Leighton, Co-op Chair said:
“The Co-op is so much more than a commercial business, and whilst I’m greatly encouraged by our current trading performance, it’s essential that our wider Co-op difference also shines brightly once more. To do this we need to build engagement among our millions of members so that our purpose can be felt throughout communities across the UK. I’m therefore asking our members to use their vote and in the process directly support our campaign to end loneliness in the UK.”
