Community News: Co-op family fun-day inspired by Co-op colleague raises funds for cancer charity

07 July 2016

The local Co-op Funeralcare team in Sunderland has raised over £500 for cancer charity, Look Good Feel Better, after holding a family fun-day.
The event, which ran for four hours in Herrington Country Park, Tyne and Wear and had everything from craft stalls, burger vans, sweet stalls and tombolas, to traditional summer races including the egg-and-spoon, three-legged and sack race.
By the end of the day, the grand total reached £500.08 and all proceeds were given to the Look Good Feel Better charity, who were presented with a check just last week by Jan and her colleagues.
The idea for the family-friendly fundraiser came from Jan Chapman, an Admin Arranger at Doxford Park Co-op Funeralcare, after her personal experience with the charity. Jan commented: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September last year. It was a huge shock and the treatment was exhausting, but I soon found Look Good Feel Better. Their support was invaluable to myself and many other women in the local area.
“The charity provides practical advice for women and teenage girls who struggle with the visible side effects of cancer treatment, aiming to help build their self-esteem. I was determined to give something back to them, and the idea of a family fun-day seemed perfect. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone that came along and supported this fantastic cause.”
Look Good Feel Better formed in the UK 22 years ago, and is the only international cancer support charity to provide women with free skincare and make-up workshops, led by trained beauty professionals.  Tips and tricks include learning to deal with eyebrow and eyelash loss and changes to the skin. Furthermore, all women leave with a gift bag full of skincare and beauty products free.
Workshops run in more than 85 hospital locations across the UK and they are held monthly at The Royal Sunderland Hospital.
Ian Daniels, Head of Fundraising for Look Good Feel Better, commented: “The fun-day was a huge success, and the money raised will go towards helping women to cope with the devastating effects that cancer can have on their self-esteem. Last year, we managed to deliver our free confidence boosting workshops and masterclases to over 15,500 women across the UK, and fundraising activities like these mean that we can expand our reach and support even more women this year.
“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Jan and her team for all the support they’ve given our cause, and we hope there will be many more opportunities for us to work together in the future.”
