Co-op Funeralcare sponsors Waterloo Bowls for 2nd year
12 August 2016
Waterloo Crown Green Bowls will be back on UK television screens, as sponsorship has been confirmed by Co-op Funeralcare for the second time.
The annual tournament, which since 1907 has been held in Blackpool, was last year televised for the first time in 26 years after Co-op Funeralcare agreed to sponsor it. Over 1.2 million people tuned into the programme from across 15th and 16th September.
As a result of Co-op Funeralcare’s sponsorship, this year’s handicap finals are being held from the 19th to the 21st September. They’ll receive live uninterrupted TV coverage on free to view channel ITV4, on the second and third day of the competition. There will also be a series of highlight programmes summarising the day’s events.
Crown Green Bowls is watched and played by over 150,000 officially registered members of The British Crown Green Bowling Association (BCGBA). With over 2,540 affiliated clubs, it has remained a firm part of the UK’s heritage, and a strong sporting tradition amongst communities across the UK.
Lesley Van Dyk, Community Engagement Partner for Co-op Funeralcare, said:
“The tournament is the most famous of its kind in the UK, and we’re delighted to be sponsoring it for the second year running. We’ve long supported the bowling sport, as it sits at the heart of thousands of communities across the UK. We hope that our sponsorship will once again provide a boost to the game, and we encourage people within those towns and cities to get involved and be a part of their local club.”
Melvyn Evans MBE, BCGBA Commercial Officer, commented:
“Last year proved to be a great success for the Crown Green Bowling tournament, and it was thanks to the sponsorship of Co-op Funeralcare that we received TV coverage for the first time in over 26 years. I have no doubt that this will cause even more excitement and anticipation amongst fans, and I think we can expect another fantastic competition for 2016.”
Mark Audin, Waterloo Bowls Manager, added:
“It’s fantastic that Crown Green Bowls is starting to receive the recognition that it deserves, as it’s a huge part of thousands of lives within the UK. Last year proved to be a milestone for competitors and fans alike, and we urge as many people as possible to join us in the stadium for the finals this year, and be a part of the terrific atmosphere.”
