  • Co-op Insurance is offering new travel cover to ensure people living with undiagnosed conditions are no longer prohibited from securing travel insurance.
  • Individuals who are on waiting lists for diagnoses, such as ADHD or autism, or who are awaiting medical test results, can have peace of mind knowing that they can still purchase travel insurance despite their undiagnosed status.
  • The launch forms part of the member-owned organisation’s broader commitment to social value and inclusivity.

Co-op Insurance has expanded its Travel Insurance product to allow individuals with undiagnosed medical conditions to secure cover for their holidays.

As part of the member-owned organisation’s commitment to inclusivity, the expanded travel insurance offering now enables those awaiting medical assessments and an official diagnosis to obtain travel insurance. Although this doesn’t include cancellation, cutting a trip short and medical emergency expenses relating to the condition, Co-op Insurance’s expanded travel cover means that having an undiagnosed condition will no longer prohibit travellers from obtaining a policy.

This updated travel cover is in response to the significant challenges faced by those who are awaiting formal diagnosis of conditions such as ADHD, autism, heart conditions, epilepsy, cancer, and other conditions which often involve lengthy waiting lists and long periods of health assessments.

Freedom of Information data requested by charity ADHD UK revealed that in some areas of the UK, those seeking an ADHD diagnosis could be waiting up to 10 years for an assessment. This statistic highlights just how long people could be excluded from securing travel insurance as many providers within the UK would reject those who have an undiagnosed condition, so this new cover from Co-op Insurance is a step towards removing this disparity.

Henry Shelford, CEO of ADHD UK said:

"Getting travel insurance while on a medical waitlist is a challenging, complex process as many providers would prohibit you from accessing travel cover with an unconfirmed health status.

"Anything that simplifies the process and allows people to relax when on holiday has to be celebrated.”

Charles Offord, Managing Director of Co-op Insurance said:

“As part of Co-op’s broader commitment to social value and inclusivity, we are proud to make an insurance policy available that responds to the needs of the communities we serve and our member-owners.

“Shaped by colleague and member feedback, this product will increase access to travel insurance and enable more people to experience peace of mind whilst travelling. We understand how vital it is for individuals with undiagnosed conditions to have the same opportunities to travel without fear of doing so without adequate cover or protection.”
