Leading community retailer, the Co-op, has unveiled plans to serve up a new store in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge later this year, following a £740,000 investment which is set to create around 15 jobs for local people.

Part of the new Raeburn Place development, which is owned by the Raeburn Place Foundation, the new Co-op is expected to open towards the end of November.

Stockbridge’s Co-op will run on 100% renewable electricity, and will offer Costa coffee, a bakery, self-service tills and hot food alongside fresh, heathy produce, award winning wines, ready meals and pizzas, free-from and vegan products, Fairtrade, food-to-go and, everyday essentials.

Co-op provides a funding boost locally and gives back to causes in the area through its Membership scheme and students who are Young Scot cardholders will be able to pocket a 10% discount off groceries at the Co-op.

Stockbridge’s Co-op will also be looking to work with community partners as part of its Food Share scheme which works to minimise food waste and make a difference locally, supporting local not-for-profit organisations who work to tackle food insecurity.

Graeme Cranston, Co-op Area Manager, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to make such a significant investment in Stockbridge - our new store will have a great look and feel, and we are looking forward to serving people living and working in the area.

“Co-op is committed to connecting communities and making a difference locally, and our aim is to operate at the heart of local life. That’s why we also want customers to know that they can become a Member of their Co-op, and that they can make a difference to local causes every time they swipe their Membership card when buying own branded products.

Ron McNab, Acting Chairman of the Raeburn Place Foundation, owners of the development added: “We are delighted to welcome the Co-op to Raeburn Place. It has a strong ethical and community focus which fits well with our charitable objectives and our intent to include a diverse offering of businesses in the development.”

The Co-op picked up the “Convenience Retailer of the Year” and “Food-to-go Retailer of the Year” titles at the latest Retail Industry Awards. Co-op is owned by around 4.6M active Members, and alongside Food, it operates: Co-op Funeralcare, Insurance, Health and Legal Services.
