Community News: Bristol Co-op Legal Services team fundraise for British Red Cross
14 July 2016
Co-op Legal Services based in Bristol has smashed through the £1,000 milestone in their fundraising for British Red Cross, through a range of challenges and activities. The money raised will contribute towards the charity’s effort to tackle loneliness in Bristol.
Just last week the Co-op Legal Services team also reached new heights when they took to the trails of the highest mountain in Wales: Mount Snowdon. The team of seven wanted to do something bold and challenging to raise money, and set themselves training challenges in the run up to the big day.
Sian Davies, Probate Administrator for Co-op Legal Services, said:
“I think that activities like these are important, not only because of the physical challenge and achievement, but because it resonates just how vital raising funds for the British Red Cross really is.
“Throughout the difficult times of the trek, we found ourselves discussing who we were doing it for, and the importance of tackling loneliness spurred us on to continue. We were all delighted to have been a part of it.”
Research by the Co-op indicates millions of people find it difficult to admit they feel lonely, and the partnership will enable thousands of vulnerable people to be reached. These findings build on the experiences of British Red Cross staff and volunteers already delivering over 200 local independent living schemes giving practical and emotional support to vulnerable people across the UK.
The Snowdon trekking team raised a grand total of £752. Furthermore, over 70 of Co-op Legal Services colleagues pitted their minds against one another in a classic “pub quiz” style evening held at the Aztec Hotel on Aztec West, Almondsbury.
There was also a raffle towards the end of the evening, with prizes including Love to Shop vouchers, a bottle of Port, a box of luxury chocolates and a bottle of champagne, donated by local businesses. Altogether, the grand total raised was £484.50.
Owen Coope, resident quiz master and Probate Customer Service Manager for Co-op Legal Services, said:
“The quiz had a great turnout and we were so pleased that so many of our colleagues came to support us in this charity effort.
“British Red Cross do truly amazing work, and help to improve the lives of thousands of people across the UK. Our team were very passionate about getting involved in some way to help with this incredible cause.”
Colleen Cleevely, Operations Director for the British Red Cross in Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire, said:
“We’d like to thank the Co-op Legal Services team in Bristol for all of their hard work. We’ve partnered with the Co-op on many community initiatives, and we’re thrilled that their teams are still just as enthusiastic to get involved.
“Their efforts play a huge part in allowing us to deliver the help to those that need it across the country, tackling loneliness and bringing those communities back together.”

About the partnership:
The Co-op and British Red Cross have launched an exciting and innovative partnership to highlight and tackle loneliness and social isolation in communities across the UK.
Loneliness is a massive, increasing but yet under-recognised crisis, adversely impacting the lives of millions in our society - shortening lives and eroding health and wellbeing.
The Co-op and British Red Cross are working together to create solutions for this seminal problem of our time and so that the voices of people experiencing loneliness are heard - campaigning for change and touching individual lives by providing vital care and support for thousands of people experiencing loneliness, helping them reconnect with their communities.
We are undertaking research that will inform the services funded by the money raised by Co-op colleagues, members and customers and the ways in which we respond through our joint campaign.
