Community News: Co-op Funeralcare gives local cat rescue a boost

14 October 2016

Doxford Park Funeralcare have helped out the Sunderland animal community by making a large donation to the local cat rescue.

Sunderland Cat Rescue is home to over 50 felines, and they were in vital need of new supplies. After spotting the manager, Carole O’Brien, reaching out to the community online for donations, Jan Chapman of Doxford Park wanted to get involved.

Jan Chapman, Admin Arranger for Co-op Funeralcare, said:

“Carole is a real salt-of-the-earth character. She does so much for the local community and always makes sure the animals in her care are extremely well taken care of. We wanted to help her and her cause in any way we could.

“I approached my manager about it, and we decided that a donation of toys, food and supplies would be the best way to help.”

The Co-op Funeralcare team bought a selection of wet and dry food, cat tunnels and cat igloos, while the local Co-op food store donated several bags of cat litter and food. Carole has seen a number of sad cases in her time as Manager of Sunderland Cat Rescue, and it’s donations like these that ensure they don’t have an equally unhappy ending.

Queenie was one such case. Originally called about a stray cat with a shoulder injury, Carole was shocked to find that Queenie had gotten her foot trapped through her collar, and the collar was now embedded into the thin skin of the leg. Thanks to Carole’s quick actions, she managed to get Queenie to a vet in time to save her leg, and she is now another boisterous addition to the rescue waiting to be rehomed.

Carole O‘Brien, Manager of Sunderland Cat Rescue, commented:

“We’re so grateful to the Co-op Funeralcare team for their generosity. We rely on donations from the public to keep us going, and these supplies will help ensure our cats stay healthy and happy until they’re rehomed.”
