Impact of floods revealed as weather warning strikes

In the wake of severe flood warnings recently issued by the Met Office, a new study from Co-op Insurance brings to light the emotional impact that flooding has had on those affected by extreme weather.

Despite the financial implications of flooding, which on average costs £44,000*, a study of 500 UK adults, who have personally been affected by floods, has revealed that it’s the emotional impact that takes the biggest toll on families.

Dealing with the aftermath of flooding resulted in a relationship breakdown for over a tenth (13%), almost a quarter (23%) had to move out of their home for a period of time, and a third (33%) have had to relocate permanently as a result of the damage.

A life-long worry for many, a fifth (18%) admit to worrying about flooding every time it rains and a further fifth (19%) say they worry about it regularly.

Highlighting the frequency of such events, a third (33%) of those affected have been flooded twice and a fifth (19%) have been flooded three times or more.

Furthermore, 1 in 5 (20%) of adults impacted said their furniture was destroyed and a tenth (12%) lost photos and personal possessions.

Of those affected by flooding:
• 13% experienced a relationship breakdown
• 23% had to move out of their home for a period of time
• 33% have had to relocate permanently
• 18% admit to worrying about flooding every time it rains
• 19% say they worry about flooding regularly
• 33% have been flooded twice
• 19% have been flooded three times or more
• 20% said their furniture was destroyed
• 12% lost photos and personal possessions

“Having been on the ground in the aftermath of flooding, we have seen first-hand the devastating effects that flooding can have on people and their families.

“Evidently, flood damage extends far beyond bricks and motor, and can cause huge amounts of emotional stress, whether it be a result of losing personal possessions or having to move out of your family home. Whilst the water may reside, the worries still remain and it’s particularly shocking to hear that almost a fifth of people are reminded of this every time it rains.”
