Medal winning para athlete Sophie Hahn MBE “Gets set” to start Rushcliffe Parkrun

08 September 2017

On your marks . . . Gold medal winning Para Athlete Sophie Hahn MBE is “getting set” to start Rushcliffe parkrun (near Nottingham) on Saturday, 9 September - getting hundreds of participants off and running to mark the launch of the Co-op’s partnership with parkrun.

The community retailer – National Partner of the recent World Para Athletics Championships in London – has become parkrun’s first local convenience retail partner as part of a shared commitment to create healthier and happier communities through exercise, food and lifestyle choices.

To launch the partnership, Co-op has joined forces with the British Para Athletics Team to invite medallists to attend a parkrun in local communities - a celebration of the athletic team’s successes and achievements at July’s World Para Athletics Championships.

Forming part of the UK’s largest running movement, Rushcliffe parkrun is a 5km timed run regularly attracting approaching 400 participants.

Sophie Hahn, 20 – who competes mainly in T38 sprint events, said:

“Successes on the track or in the field are in no small part down to the continued and unprecedented levels of support of the Great British public. I would like to thank everyone for the encouragement that they have shown to me, support which I will endeavor to repay on, and off, the track. Showing others the benefits of active, healthy lifestyles and the possibilities that exist within disability sport is extremely important - it’s great to see that Co-op is passionate about encouraging the nation to adopt a healthier lifestyle and are a massive supporter of the British Para Team.”

As the exclusive local convenience retail partner, Co-op will be offering healthy, affordable recipe ideas and food inspiration to participants, with a focus on meals that are simple to prepare. Co-op will also be attending parkrun events to distribute healthy food products. With great service on your doorstep, Co-op is best placed to help the busy nation pick up fantastic food and quality snacks on the go, supporting their daily needs.

Amanda Jennings, Marketing Communications Director at Co-op said:

“We are delighted to partner with parkrun. As a retailer focused on providing for the community you only have to see a parkrun to appreciate that this partnership is the perfect match.

“At Co-op we are proud to champion a different way of doing business and we understand the communities we operate in. As like-minded organisations working together we share the passion of supporting and building links within the community and encouraging the nation to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“We want consumers to not only choose Co-op, but to assist them in building healthy, tasty meals using good quality fresh ingredients, and help to pull communities together.”

To activate this exciting partnership, Co-op will be visiting parkruns across the UK to sample and promote healthier food choices.

Nick Pearson, Chief Executive Officer at parkrun said:

“We are excited to welcome Co-op to the parkrun family. More than 600 communities across the UK are coming together every weekend to support each other, enjoy the fresh air and be physically active.

“We are committed to helping parkrunners and their communities become healthier and more and more we are conscious that healthy food choices are a critical part of health. We really want to help the parkrun community understand the impact healthy food choices have on health and wellbeing. Working with Co-op, we can ensure that we promote good value, locally available and fresh ingredients.”
