Pampered pets: Brits to splash out more on pets than partners and kids this Christmas
16 December 2025
- Research commissioned by Co-op Insurance reveals that more than a third (34%) of pet owners admit they’ll spend more on their pets than their children, this festive period.
- Meanwhile, the member-owned business also found that a third (33%) of pet owners are set to spend more on their pets this year than in 2024.
- What’s more, almost one in three (30%) owners will be going on holiday for the festive period, and of those jetting off, over three quarters (77%) say they will be bringing their pet.
- This comes as Co-op Insurance reminds pet owners to take precautions to keep pets safe during the festive period and ensure they have the right cover in place if they are taking their furry friend abroad.
Research commissioned by Co‑op Insurance reveals that more than a third of UK pet owners (34%) confess they’ll spend more on their pets than their children, during the festive period.
The member-owned business’ findings show that pets are the priority for many in the UK, with almost one in three (32%) admitting that their furry companions will outshine their partners under the tree — making them the most indulged members of many households.
What’s more, it seems the nation’s obsession is only growing, with one in three (33%) set to spend more on their pets this year than last, prioritising toys and treats for their furry friend over the rest of their gifting list.
The research also revealed that the festive frenzy doesn’t stop there. Almost two-fifths (36%) say their pet’s Christmas outfit will cost more than their own, with owners forking out for everything from matching jumpers to festive costumes.
And it’s not just outfits. Three-fifths of pets (62%) will have their own stocking hung up this year, while two-fifths (42%) will even get an advent calendar — joining in the daily countdown to Christmas alongside the rest of the family.
When the big day arrives, pets won’t be left out of the feast. Three in five (63%) say their pets will be served a special Christmas dinner, complete with turkey trimmings and gravy.
Meanwhile, almost one in three (30%) owners say they will be going on holiday over the festive period and of those, over three quarters (77%) will be bringing their pets along with them, ensuring their loyal companions enjoy a getaway too.
Previous research shows that of those who choose to take their pets abroad, one in eight (12%) do so because pet boarding facilities are too expensive but almost a third (31%) say they ‘couldn’t bear the thought of leaving them at home’ and would miss them too much.*
Despite the excitement, Co-op Insurance is also advising pet owners to take precautions to keep their furry friends safe over the festive period.
For those taking their pets abroad during the festive period, the member-owned business is also reminding pet-owners to ensure that they have the right policy in place that will cover any veterinary treatment while they are outside of the UK, should their pet require it.**
Andrew Nevitt, Head of Pet at Co-op Insurance said:
"It appears that this yearr, Britain's pets have become the real stars of the festive season. With owners going to extraordinary lengths to make Christmas special for their animals, from stocking and advent calendars to festive dinners and even holidays abroad, it's more important than ever that pets are properly protected.
“Increased travel, new toys, and all the extra excitement can bring unexpected risks, whether that’s illness from unsuitable treats, accidents with decorations, or stress from journeys.
“Having the right insurance in place gives owners peace of mind that, whatever happens, their companions are covered. Christmas should be magical for everyone, and insurance helps ensure that pets can enjoy the celebrations safely.”
