Co-op Insurance has revealed that a tenth (10%)* of UK holidaymakers have said that a holiday companion being glued to their phone has ruined their holiday.

This comes as Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH)’s new initiative, #ScrollFreeSeptember**, has just got underway, urging the public to take a break from scrolling social media throughout September.

The study also shows that a further tenth (8%) say that not having enough data on their phone can ruin a holiday.

Three tenths of 18-34 year olds complain about their holiday counterpart’s consistent scrolling, yet are the worst culprits when admitting that a lack of data on their phone ruins a holiday – a quarter (25%) of 18-34 year olds say this spoils their getaway.

Scots are the most annoyed by their companions being glued to their phone, with 15% of those from Edinburgh claiming that it ruins their holiday, closely followed by people from Aberdeen (13%).

Whilst those from Bristol don’t have to contend with phone-obsessed holiday companions, with just 3% finding it a problem.

A call from your boss was also revealed to harm a holiday, with a tenth (8%) saying it ruins their time away. In fact, thinking of work proves to be another holiday-spoiler, with 11% claiming that it ruins their holiday experience.

Colin Butler, Head of Travel Insurance at Co-op says:

“There are sometimes unavoidable situations that arise on holiday that can have the potential to ruin the experience. Getting ill, or losing luggage can be annoying, but having a travel insurance policy provides a safety net is in place to make sure the holiday isn’t totally ruined.

“However, some potential holiday-spoilers are not something an insurance policy can save – so, in some instances, the only solution may be to step away from the social media and towards the sun!”
