Finding new wines to try can often feel confusing and risky so Co-op’s summer wine ambassador and much-loved influencer, Liam D’Arcy aka ‘The Wine Wally’ has shared his top tips on how to explore new bottles.

Liam D’Arcy, The Wine Wally, says: " Choosing a new wine can feel surprisingly daunting. With so many bottles, grape varieties and regions on the shelf, it's easy to worry about picking something you won't enjoy. Most of us tend to stick to wines we know because there's a sense of comfort in choosing a familiar favourite, however promotions like Co-op’s are a great way for shoppers to explore something new. My top tips are:

If you're stuck in a white wine rut, don't change everything...

The easiest first step is to buy the same grape you already enjoy, but from a different country. For example, if you usually drink New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, try one from France, Chile or South Africa. It'll still feel familiar, but you'll discover a completely different style without taking a big gamble.

Once you're feeling more confident, shop by flavour, not by grape. Rather than trying to remember lots of grapes or region names, think about the style of wine you enjoy...

If you like bright, crisp and refreshing whites, look out for wines such as Albariño from north-west Spain, Gavi from north-west Italy, Vermentino from Italy, Picpoul de Pinet from southern France, Assyrtiko from Greece or a Chardonnay from Chile. If you prefer richer, fuller-bodied or fruitier whites, try Chenin Blanc, particularly from South Africa, White Rioja from Spain or Viognier from southern France.

Some of the best value wines come from places you might not expect...

Don't overlook countries like Chile, Portugal, Hungary or Moldova. They've been making wine for centuries, but because they're less familiar to many shoppers, you can often find fantastic quality for the price.

Don't be afraid to try something new...

One of the biggest trends in white wine is towards brighter, fresher and more food-friendly styles. Producers all over the world are making wines with more freshness and vibrancy because that's increasingly what people enjoy drinking. So, if you pick up a bottle you've never tried before, there's a good chance it'll still have the crisp, refreshing style.”
