The Co-op Way 2017 - Communities

How we do business responsibly.

We connect with the communities served by our food stores and funeral homes, and throughout our supply chain both in the UK and internationally.

Local communities

We give 1% of what our members spend on Co-op own branded products as well as money from sales of carrier bags to fund local community projects near our stores and funeral homes. In 2017 we gave £20m to over 8,000 local projects.

We’ve also trialled an impact assessment to better understand the potential added social value our Local Community Fund is generating in UK communities.

We’re building networks of local people in our communities through our Member Pioneers.

We gave nearly £4,000 to Woodchurch Methodist Church, to help connect older people with their community.

International communities

We source our products from 68 countries and support hundreds of communities throughout our supply chain.

We work to strengthen our relationships with the communities from which we source our products and services, and support the wider international community - including the most vulnerable at times of crisis.

In 2017 we gave £1.8m from the sale of bottled water to fund clean water projects in some of the poorest parts of the world.

Apprenticeships

We're helping young people start and develop their careers through our growing apprenticeship programme across all areas of the business.

This includes identifying suitable opportunities in our insurance business for young people from our Academies, and 7 young people started their apprenticeship with us in August 2017.

Our programme is open to anyone over the age of 16 and we’ve recruited over 3,600 apprentices since 2011.

Apprentices work in many roles across our businesses
