As a co-operative, we're owned by our millions of members and we do things differently. Our members, communities, colleagues and planet come first and we work to do what’s right for them.

We were founded in 1844 by the Rochdale Pioneers to provide fair, affordable and ethical access to food and goods, with profits being shared amongst our members for their benefit and the benefit of their communities. The Rochdale Pioneers believed in a different way of doing business – owned by its members and working for the common good and founded on a set of values and principles that enshrine a different, fairer and better way of doing business.

We were the original business with purpose and, in today’s modern world, those ethical principles continue to guide our decision making.

Take at look at our Co-operative Values and Principles

We believe in co-operating for a fairer world, and everything we do contributes to achieving this. Our purpose is Championing a better way of doing business for you and your community.

Fairer means fairer for:

  • Our members

  • Our communities

  • Our colleagues

  • Our planet

At the Co-op we also have a unique co-operative model which underpins our co-operative difference and promotes democratic member control.
